Obidos is one of those old walled towns in Portugal that everyone wants to stroll around. I’s a pretty town always filled with flowers and has some of the best views ever from the top of its hill top castle. Its not too far to travel from Lisbon and at weekends is a favourite with Lisboans who just want to escape the city’s traffic and noise. In the month of Fenbruary there is a festval that takes place in the town and lasts for ten days. The streets here are narrow and cobbled, sometimes difficult to get around but it’s worth it if you are a lover of fine chocolate.
No matter which corner you turn it’s always filled with chocolate; amazing sculptures that have been created by hand. Many chocolatiers take part in competitions to win prizes and certificates bearing the names and titles of the best chocolate makers in the region. Pastry chefs set up workshops; organise and take part in cookery classes based around the one ingredient that everyone loves – chocolate! Children are encouraged to participate and special classes are set up so they can get stuck in and have a lot of fun.
Although the festival takes the creativity side seriously it is also organised so people can have a lot of fun and of course indulge in scrumptious delicacies that melt in your mouth and leave you wanting more.
