Santa Monica offers some of the most entertaining beach bike riding in all of America. The South Bay Bike Trail goes from Santa Monica to Torrance going through interesting beach towns.
Bicyclists, joggers, skaters, wheelchair riders, and pedestrians all share the trail, which is 14 feet wide (in most places) with a smooth asphalt or concrete surface. The path is mostly along the beach so you can enjoy the ocean view while cycling.
We rented bikes from our hotel but there were a number of rental shops all along the pathway. There’s no excuse not to try it.
From our hotel we could ride past the Baywatch-inspiring Santa Monica Pier and into the moneyed land of Malibu. Wasn’t Clint Eastwood the mayor at one time?
South from our hotel we could ride right into the heart and soul of the ultimate California beach town: Venice Beach, where we could watch weightlifters, get asked if we needed medical marijuana and look at creative graffiti.
Past Venice, the path leaves the beach to go around Marina del Rey and returns to the beach at Santa Monica State Beach.
