When I was still living near the Clark Air Field more than twenty years ago, one of the things that fascinated me a lot were the parachutes that would occasionally streak the sky. I've always figured that those were soldiers training. But I did enjoy every time they would do it, with their colorful parachutes creating a nice view for me.
The parachute show was therefore something that I really enjoyed during the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Clark. It brought back memories of my childhood when I saw different colored parachutes bring their passengers down from the sky.
It was probably watching the parachutes float at around one in the afternoon which gave me an awful sunburn. Mostly my fault for forgetting to put on sunblock which was just in my bag. I was too excited to take photos, you see. How would I know that they would have another show during the more skin-friendly hour of four in the afternoon?
I took particular fancy with pure orange parachute which carried a orange-jumpsuited person to the grown. Mainly because of my affinity for Netherlands, which national color is orange. I also liked the green and black one which reminded me of the Brazil flag. My favorite, however, were the tandem parachuters. I found it fascinating how they were able to work together. And the double chute looked quite nice.
Most of the parachuters were able to execute beautiful landings. Since they did not fall from a very high height, their acceleration may not have been as fast and therefore their descent would have been easier to control.
I watched around ten parachuters do their perfect landings on the ground. There was one which lost a bit of control and did a bit of skid, but he seemed okay.
As I watched them, I wonder if I would like to do it myself. I remember wanting to back when I was small and fearless. I'm now 31 with more crazy fears... I could not decide at that moment if I would want to. But the fact that I did not give myself a categorical "no" gives me hope that I may, too, try the same stunt someday. :P
