The economy of Roussillon was based on ochre for 1,000 years until after WWII. Perched on its red cliffs, the town will appear to you long before you get to it. And even though it is crowded with tourists, now its main industry, you will find its narrow streets and tinted buildings welcoming and charming. Its shops will entice you to spend more than you planned.
The Giants Causeway is a walk through the ancient ochre mines, with its cathedral spires and canyons and feeling of a moon-scape.
