Chetumal is a typical border town. It’s the first town across the border from Belize and is generally a stopping point for travellers heading further into Mexico or Belizeans who fancy a change. There isn’t much in the way of culture to be found in Chetumal. There is a museum but every time we tried to visit it was shut. There is a shopping mall with a cinema, so if you fancy some American culture then head here. Be careful using the cash points here as one of them stole my card, although the nice man helped me get it back. The centre itself isn’t bad. There are some nice places to stay and plenty of places to eat. Be warned that if you don’t speak much Spanish you might find it hard to get around. We stayed at the El Dorado hotel, a good base for town and a swimming pool. It has TVs in the rooms and is good for a relatively cheap price (we paid 220 pesos for a twin room for 2 nights). I’m not staying don’t go to Chetumal but there are certainly better places to visit but it does serve as a useful base if crossing the border.
