This village is known as the location of the "Miracle on Ice" -- when the US hockey team upset the USSR and went on to win the Gold Medal. While the city continues to trade on that piece of history, it is much more than a one-event place. The village sits on Mirror Lake -- not Lake Placid! A great start to the day in the summer would be to runa few miles around the lake and follow it up with a swim across. The surrounding area includes Whiteface Mountain, the site of downhill skiing in the winter, and downhill mountain biking in summer. The lodge has full bike rental facilities with maps and suggestions. For those interested in hiking, there are several trails outlined in the ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) books. The Ausable River runs next to the road in many places and offers a place to explore on foot. Finally, if you are a bargain hunter, the village is filled with tourist friendly shops.
