The mosque is built where Hz.Eyyübi El-Ensari was to be buried. (He is the Islamic character who hosted Hz. Mohammed when he first visited to the city of Medina and was killed in the battle of surrounding to Ýstanbul in 668-669.) First, the tomb and mosque was built by the command of Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Mehmet the conqueror) in 1458. It was totally demolished by the big earthquake in 1766 and rebuilt by the command of Sultan Selim III between 1798 and 1800. Last time it was repaired was in the period of Sultan Mahmud II. Eyüp Sultan Mosque is one of the most popular places for the Ýslamic world, and thousands of people visit every week.
