Johannesburg Stories and Tips

Week 4

Last weekend, Imelda, Helen, and I went to Sun City. Before we went, everyone was telling us how stunning this place was, and boy, they were right!! You have to see this place to appreciate it. It's amazing. Everything is so over-the-top but fits in perfectly.

We went to the Valley of the Waves on Saturday morning. It's like a man-made beach with wave machines. Every now and again you hear a loud beep and a huge wave comes out. It's really funny watching everyone trying to swim away from it, and you can hear all the children screaming with excitement when the huge wave comes. There is so much going on. There are water slides; one is 90 degrees and made me feel dizzy looking at it. There was no way I was chancing that!! They have jet skiing and parasailing just to name a few.

After a few hours at the Valley of the Waves, we sat with popcorn and watched a talent show sponsored by People magazine. It was funny. Some people should really videotape and watch themselves before they enter things like this. Saturday evening we went to a show. It was a bit like the shows they have in the west end and cost 6 pounds a ticket. The dancing and singing was amazing. All the way back to the apartment we could not get the tunes out of our heads.

Sunday we had to get up at 5am!! We went on a game drive at Pilanesberg National Park. We managed to see three out of the Big 5, which we were pleased about. This included a lion, rhino, and elephant. The park suffered a fire a few weeks ago caused by lightening. A few of the animals were burned so bad that they had to be put down. It was sad to see where there was once lots of grass for the animals to eat and hide in was now-burnt land. The drive took 2 and half hours. We went back to the apartment, had breakfast, and went to the Emperors Pool, which is above the Valley of the Waves. It was lovely just chilling in the sunshine around a gorgeous pool. We had lunch and headed back to Jo’Burg.

I could have stayed at Sun City for at least a week. There is so much to do here to cater to any taste, from the casinos to shows to bars to just enjoying the amazing way the whole place has been decorated. I can’t describe how stunning this place is. I would recommend it to anyone ever visiting South Africa. Next weekend we are going to Gold Reef City and Soweto. I will let you know how that goes in next week's journal!! I can’t believe we only have 2 weeks left!!!
