Well it's been a while since I last updated my travels, so there is quite a lot to say, so I do apologize if this entry is a little longer than normal.
The last few weeks have been very enjoyable indeed, and I think I have set new boundaries when it comes to English teaching. The highlight was performing a world’s first ever English lesson using Chas and Dave's smash hit "Rabbit." After a few strange facial expressions from my students, it went down a treat!! I also bit the bullet and decided to open Poland to the joys of Morrissey’s' "First of the Gang to Die," and I was more than happy when I wasn't met with the silence and shouts that I was when I sang karaoke in America. I think bringing Daphne and Celeste and Therapy's "Diane" into the lesson for old time’s sake was one step too far! It sometimes makes me wonder whether I actually write the lessons to help with the students English or to amuse myself!
Other choice lessons I decided to teach were about the Maasai and circumcision, and equality between men and women and that women just like a quick shag as much as the men (and the article I gave them to read even contained the word shag, although this was by accident!)! They definitely got the class interested. As did teaching a class the meaning of the word hangover!
But I think the most pleasing of lessons was when I was teaching the supernatural, as what was an informative lesson about ghosts just ended up me talking about my ex-housemate from London and her unhealthy obsessions of believing she gets abducted by aliens and that she is followed everywhere by fairies, not to mention the jar of water that she talks to. My students were loving the tales and by the end of the lesson everyone were in agreement that she was a complete nutter, although they all seemed to understand when I said she was French!
I really should work on pronunciation in my lessons as well but when children pronounce 'funny faces' as 'funny f*ck*rs' I just find it far too amusing!
A highlight of the last 3 weeks was a trip to a nearby Aqua Park with my students for the day. I would say getting to see my naked body is as rare as a solar-eclipse, and I think everybody understood the importance of the occasion and how lucky they were to witness a once in a lifetime opportunity. The following day I went for a trip to the nearby city of Gdynia with another of my students. After visiting an aquarium and seeing all the city had to offer, we went for a quick beer before catching the train back home. Unfortunately I should have realized that having a bladder like a walnut and drinking 2/3 of a liter of beer in 20 minutes was not a good idea, especially when the trains don't seem to have any toilets and my stop was 1 hour away. I have never experienced agony like it in all my life, but I just managed to make it home before wetting myself!! One of my students also invited me to their birthday party, which was good fun, and quite nostalgic as I haven’t played musical chairs for at least 14 years or so!! I was still as competitive as ever.
I have decided that while I don't mind teaching in a small language school, the idea of teaching in a normal school is definitely something I will never consider as a full time job. I had the pleasure of going to go and teach in a school for a couple of hours as a favor to another teacher that I work with, but I think I much prefer teaching people who pay to learn and therefore have an interest, than children who have no choice to go to school and don't really care!!
Other than that after spending the week teaching I have started going out into town not only on Friday nights but Saturday nights as well. Weekends are quality at the moment. I go drinking with one student on the Friday night, then on the Saturday I am invited out by one of the families I teach, where I get to try and talk Polish all day, and then in the evening I go out with some of my other students for some more drinks, and usually some very blue and dirty conversations. The Sunday is just like the Saturday as I get invited out again by another family! You really can't complain.
Well I think that's more or less all of the interesting things I have been up to in the past 3 weeks. The next big adventure I have planned is traveling to Berlin to meet my girlfriend in 10 days time when she comes over to visit, which I am very excited about. It should be an interesting 9-hour train journey that’s for sure and I’m not sure exactly how to do it yet!
Only just over 4 weeks now until I am back in England! How the time has flown by!
