St. Thomas Stories and Tips

Birding the Islands

Tiny hummingbird nest Photo, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

After you had your fill of "shopping" and all the commercial joys of the VI, don't miss the fabulous tropical birds and their habitats on the islands. You don't need to enter a zoo; just head into the "bush" along various trails. During the summer (May to October), you'll find all the resident birds and their young thriving in paradise. Everybody sees the gulls, but have you seen the hummingbirds, cuckoos, kingbirds, mockingbirds, handsome white-cheeked pintails, or the most elegant black-necked stilt? Who can not love the brown-throated parakeets? Listen for their resonant calls and you're there! Be sure to bring your binoculars and cameras.
