There are seven lighthouses on the eastern coast of North Carolina on the Outer Banks. We visited only five of them and each and every one was a marvel in itself. One is on a small island where they say there are wild horses. I'm sorry to say that we didn't see any. However, we had to take a small private ferry boat (for people, not cars) over to the island, which was fun in itself. You can take the ferry out to the island and stay all day if you have a mind to. They also have another bigger ferry where you can take your vehicle, but I'm not sure if it has to be a 4x4 or not. Some of the lighthouses are open to the public during warmer weather.
