Our road trip started in the small town of Levin in the North Island. We drove to Wellington and took the ferry to Picton. We arrived in Picton at 4 in the morning and spent the rest of the night in the ferry terminal. In the morning we rented an RV and our trip down the South Island began. There is not that much traffic in the South Island. It’s a nice quiet drive full of eye-popping sights. At one point in the drive we stopped to take a picture of the coastline. I have never seen anything that breathtaking.
Once we made it to Christchurch, we decided to stay the night there. We found a parking lot and left the RV there and headed downtown to see some sights and hit the pubs. Christchruch is full of really nice parks throughout. It also has a great nightlife.
Around 12 the next day we headed for Dunedin. It took us about 7 hours to get there. We drove right through the middle of downtown with the RV - driving in Dunedin is not that bad. Most everything is with in walking distance of the city center. The first night we were there we made friends with two guys who were going to the game we were. When we told them we were staying in an RV, they invited us to stay in their house with there family. I was so surprised - we had only talked to them for about a couple of hours and they were inviting us into their home.
So we took them up on their offer. I have never eaten so much food until that next day, when they had a huge party with everything you would want (beer, a ton of food). Later that day, we all went back to town to the Terrace, the bar we’d met at (the Terrace is a great place to go - great food, friendly staff). We left the bar and headed for the game around 6:30 - the stadium was in walking distance, so it was great for after the game. The Allblacks won, and there was a great celebration in the streets throughout the night. Dunedin is one of the best cities I have ever been to. I would consider moving there someday.
