Lambir Hills National Park (near to Miri)

Early morning at Lambir HillsMore Photos

Since the accommodation at Lambir Hills is even more expensive than other national parks in Sarawak, we decided to share a ‘chalet’ with a couple of other people we met en-route. Despite the price, the ‘chalet’ was significantly less pleasant than other national park accommodation we’d stayed at. There was also a rather limited supply of food available at the canteen (basically, noodles, noodles and packet cakes). It seemed that the BBC crew that were filming "Jungle" at the time were afforded different meals though…

During the early evening, we headed to a lovely pool with waterfall that’s about 250m from the entrance to the trails. It was a fantastic place for a swim, although we didn’t go in that particular evening. When we got back to the park entrance, we found we were locked in and had to climb through a tiny gap in the fence.

After a fitful night’s sleep in a really hot room with a fan that went round in circles and took you by surprise, we set off for a very early morning walk in the hope of seeing some wildlife. Of course, we’d forgotten that ‘Hills’ features in the name of the park and after a couple of packet cakes from the shop we found that the trail was really tiring. We persevered and saw an unidentified monkey jump across the trail!

One interesting feature of the park at Lambir Hills is that there is an observation tower, from which you can view the canopy from within. It was very hot on the tower so we didn’t spend a really long time there, but were fortunate to see a giant tree squirrel (well over a foot long) while watching.

We were beginning to get pushed for time, so the next day we took a bus to Miri to meet our flight back to Kuala Lumpur.
