A day trip to Fort Macon State Park, near Atlantic Beach, was one of the fun things we did on our trip. Fort Macon is a well-preserved pentagon-shaped fortress which was built in 1826-34 on the east end of Bogue Banks, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. General Robert E. Lee was stationed at Fort Macon as a young Army officer. In 1862, the Fort fell into Union hands and this gave the Union forces complete control of the entire North Carolina coast. We enjoyed our discovery walk through the Fort and then visited the Museum Shop to buy some postcards and a couple of books. After that, it was time for a picnic and a walk on the beach.
