It would be hard to say enough good things about the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. What a wonderful place to experience the outdoors and nature. There are many places to take long walks and view wildlife, and the Black Point Wildlife Drive is also wonderful. Since the birds and alligators don't feel threatened, visitors have a wonderful opportunity to see them up close and natural.
There is a wonderful visitor's center with great exhibits, a video explaining the work that is done to protect and enhance the wildlife in the area, and also US Wildlife Service Rangers are available to answer any questions you might have. The first time we visited, there were little alligators in one of the aquariums. We learned that they had grown so much that they had to be released into the wild.
What a wonderful place for children as well as adults to visit!! Each time we visit, we seem to see something different and more interesting. We plan to return again next year. Who knows, maybe there will be baby alligators in the aquarium again.
