Delray Beach Stories and Tips

Dover House

I visited the Dover House in late August with my husband and my family. We had two units on the lower level, each slept four people (two in the master bedroom, two on the pullout sofa). The units were not large and were not what would be considered "luxurious" but we're not too picky about having a lot of room or fancy things anyway. One caution--the bathroom is very small and has no shelves or cabinets for storage of toiletries. Each had a full kitchen, although the refrigerator was more "dorm-sized."

The arrangement of the resort is more like a motel, with all the units facing into a large courtyard with tables and fountains. Despite each unit being right next door to others and the motel like arrangement of the resort, it was suprisingly quiet and private.

The pool (but no hot tub) was well kept and well heated; the second half of our week they instituted a policy where you had to obtain a key to enter the pool area. As far as resort sponsored activities, one morning there was a free donut breakfast laid out but that was it.

The resort is directly across the two-lane road from a beach access point, crossing was never a problem. Just a short walk from the resort are numerous restaurants of all types and the "main drag," Atlantic Avenue. All in all Delray Beach was a very quiet town, even at night, with the exception of the bars and nightclubs on Atlantic Avenue. Aside from visiting the beach (which is very nice) and visiting Atlantic Avenue there isn't much else to do in Delray Beach itself.

If you need groceries you'll have to drive to one of the major grocery stores. Within about 5 minutes drive from the resort are grocery stores, more "chain" type restaurants and fast food, a Target store, a movie theater, etc. We took a day trip into Miami (about an hour and a half) to go to the Zoo, which was one of the best zoos I've visited in the US. Another day we took a trip to Key Largo (about 3 hours) and visited Pennekamp State Park, where one of the few coral reefs in the US is located. They offer snorkeling, SCUBA, and also glass bottom boat rides out to the reef. We also visited Sawgrass Mills outlet mall in Ft. Lauderdale, which is absolutely the largest outlet mall I've ever seen.

One final thing I would recommend is taking about 3 hours and making the drive from Miami-Delray (or vice versa) along A1A instead of the highway. The huge houses and mansions you will see are fantastic. The traffic on this route can be a bit of a hassle in the Miami (the highways in Miami are extremely congested) area but once out of there it usually clears up.

All in all, Delray Beach is a very nice and quiet area, very good for families looking for a relaxing beach vacation. The Dover House, while not a luxury resort, was nice, friendly, quiet, and perfectly acceptable for a family of four (in one unit). The area is also close to many more "cosmopolitan" areas like Ft. Lauderdale and Miami and is close to many other activities, should you decide to venture out.
