Our Salzburg guide commenced the tour in Mirabell gardens, where Maria and the children sang "Do-Re-Me." From there we went across the river to the Old Town. Here we saw Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse no. 9, where the Leopold Mozart family lived from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27, 1756.
The old city, and in particular the shopping lane of Getreidegasse, consists of high narrow houses tightly nestled together. The shops have a certain charm with their wrought-iron guild signs. (Look for the wrought-iron McDonald’s sign!) It is interesting to see a McDonald’s without the traditional yellow arches!
Also in the Old Town is the statue of Mozart (by Ludwig Schwanthaler, ceremoniously unveiled on September 5, 1842 in the presence of Mozart's sons). Mozart's wife did not live to see the statue's unveiling.
Other sites seen (but not visited) included Felsenreitschule and Salzburg's Residenz. (Maria crossed Residenz square in a bus on her way from Nonnberg Convent to the Trapp Villa singing, "I have confidence in me.")
On our return home, we dusted off the Sound of Music DVD and relived our wonderful visit to Salzburg!
