Every year since 1950 the New Ulm Fire Department sponsored a Fireman’s Barbecue to raise money for the volunteer department. It is held at New Ulm Fireman’s Park, built in 1962. We went to the 53rd such barbecue on September 21, 2003. Unfortunately, it rained most of the day and I got stuck in the mud after parking on a grass lot. But it was fun.
This annual barbecue has an auction of such things as homemade quilts (my wife did one), plants, pickled vegetables, yard statues, etc. It also has a cake walk and games for kids. Plus is has barbecued beef, pork, and mutton with a copyrighted barbecue sauce. Mmmm.
My father was the treasurer of the Fire Department for 50 years, ending in 2001. I remember going to every one of these barbeques during my youth and then having my father go over the books to see how much money the department took in. They earned enough over the years to buy new fire trucks.
