Hot Springs Itself -- What a Place!

Hot Springs National Park Photo, Hot Springs, Arkansas

What a lovely time my husband and I had in Hot Springs the last week of September 2000.

Our RCI Bonus week was at Emerald Isle Resort, just a few miles from downtown Hot Springs. It is situated on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Hamilton. It's a very pretty setting indeed!

We had a very spacious condominium that had everything we needed for the week, and one thing we really appreciated were the decks off both the living room and the master bedroom that overlooked the lake. What great views!

The downtown is wonderful with its historic buildings and its historic, renovated Bath Houses on "Bath House Row" on Central Avenue. Another wonderful spectacle is Hot Springs National Park, portions of which are nearly surrounded by the city.

The park has 10 miles of good mountain roads for sightseeing by car, as well as extensive walking and horse trails. We took the drive up the mountain to the Observation Tower. The 216' tower gives you great views of the entire Hot Springs area. Oh, yes, there's a nifty gift shop at the TOP too!!

A cruise on the Belle of Hot Springs on the waterways of Lake Hamilton one warm and sunny afternoon was really special. We also went on a "Duck" tour, hosted by the National Park -- that was REALLY FUN! By land and by water!

We enjoyed a narrated and scenic train ride one morning on the Hot Springs/White River Scenic Railroad. Many were onboard, with lots of smiles on lots of faces! It was a 1950s era train.

We had an Italian dinner at Coy's Restaurant our first night in town -- it was highly recommended to us by the resort. It was a perfect place to celebrate a birthday, which happened to be mine. Another place we went to eat during the week was McClard's, a rib place, which is known to have been a favorite of Bill Clinton's.

The Bath House Show, at the town's only live theatre, capped off the week for us very well on Saturday evening! It is a rousing musical -- just fantastic! There are also, of course, numerous shops and stores to browse that are unique and quaint.

To sum up, it was a really great week. The weather was good, too -- warm with sunshine-filled days!
