Cuzco, ancient capital of the Incas is spectacular! Set in a valley surrounded by mountains! There are loads of tourists (aka gringos!) here so we fit straight in, especially as there are two Irish bars; Paddy O'Flaherty's and Rosie O'Grady's!
We were fortunate to be in Cuzco for Easter as it is a huge celebration here.. on Good Friday we watched a huge parade of holy statues from the Cathedral to one of the churches. There were about 10,000 people in the main square watching the procession. The locals are very religious as proved by the hundreds of people in queues outside all the churches on Holy Thursday - we think they were queues for making confessions!!
In Cuzco, we bought a pass which gave us access to all the main museum and historic sites for ten days (cost 10USD). Of the 20 sites included, we visited about 16.
Included on this pass were four old Incan sites - Tambo Machay which was a bathing area and resting place for travellers, Puku Pukara, Quenko and Sacsayhuaman (pronounced Sexy Woman!) - an old Inca fortress with spectacular views over the city. We visited these four sites in one day. We got a bus to the furthest away (Tambo Machay) and then walked back towards Cuzco, stopping at each site - a pleasant walk which took about 6 hours, including stopping at sites!
