Niagara-on-the-Lake Stories and Tips

Wine Tasting

If you've got the time whilst you're also in the region, it is well worth making the effort to go wine tasting (which is sometimes included if your on a 'Niagara' tour). There are numerous Vineyards around, offering tastings in various types, from the the standard reds and whites, to fruit wines and the infamous ice wines. Most are free, except you normally have to pay a C$1 or so to taste the ice ones. The fruit wines are made from locally grown produce, and come in flavours from plum to apple, and raspberry to nectarine. They make a great alternative to normal reds and whites. The ice wines are really sweet dessert wines, and as they are only produced in few places in the world, it is well worth paying to try one. They are absoulty lovely.

The tourist information centre in Niagara-on-the-Lake will tell where to find a vineyard if needed (or see www.niagaraonthelake.com), or you will often see them advertised as you drive through the area. One of the vineyards we went to was Sunnybrook Farm (http://www.sunnybrookfarmwinery.com) which was small and friendly, serving us some great fruit wines. It would definitely be easy to spend a good afternoon touring the farms and tasting away!
