The Atheneum is New Harmony´s visitor center. This huge building sits on the banks of the Wabash, right by the bridge to Illinois. Unlike the rest of the historical town, the Atheneum is strikingly modern. Designed by the famous architect Richard Meier, the building is white, shiny, and angular. The inside has wooden floors, ramps in place of stairs, and huge windows. Just inside, you will find the desk with information about guided tours and general information about the town. All tours begin with a short film about the town´s history, and this is shown in the theater in the Atheneum. You can also see a model of the town as it used to be. Depending on the weather, you may be able to climb the stairs to the roof for a beautiful view of the town. A gift shop is downstairs, which has a variety of merchandise and gifts.
