If the name Pebble Beach conjures up any images in my mind, it would be that of a golf course which became the property of the Japanese at one point, and that was resold to the US at some other point. And I finally got to see it. There is much more to Pebble Beach however, than the golf courses. The 17 mile drive takes you through most of the terrain, at some elevations and at sea level as well. Frankly, there is not much to see or marvel at from the top. If you want to see fantastic views from a mountain top, go to Bali, or read my journal at Uluwatu
There are villas and exquisite houses in Pebble Beach which belong to what they call here the "rich and private" . In fact, I picked up magazine about the area that boasted that label on its cover. Well I read it anyway.
Aside from the palatial residences, you will never be able to absorb all of what the Pacific coastline will offer you. There will be jagged shorelines, jutting rocks with birds perched on them, or better yet, seals. There are also squirrels here, but they have shorter tails than the ones I'm accustomed to seeing. You will never again think of cypress trees the same way as before. They are magnificent constructions of nature that seem to be in eternal conflict with their twisted trunks and pointed branches.
I have learned that Pebble Beach has
the most inflated housing market in the United States; well I never spotted any "live" person on the drive except for an oriental woman outside the gates of her home tending to a small child. And yes, this is an extremely private community, which is purportedly kept that way by armed guards. If you can see part of the homes higher up, when you get to the lower levels, the properties are all but hidden by gigantic stone walls, or equally high hedging. Once in a while you can spot laborers who are undoubtedly expanding/improving properties and who most likely come from the poorer areas like Salinas. Undoubtedly, the society behind those walls is prone to the excesses and frivolity of the rich.
There is a celebrated Spa here by the same name that offers rejuvenation and revitalization to prospective customers. Why, you can get a 50 minute massage here for a mere $100.00; if you’re feeling toxic and inflamed, they’ll wrap your body in mud for $155.00.
There are 3 separate accommodations complexes at Pebble Beach just waiting to make your every wish come true; they are: the Inn at Spanish Bay , The Lodge at Pebble Beach , and the Casa Palmero . Also an Equestrian Center and Beach & Tennis Club. Where do they go here for groceries?
