Not far off the N703 road between Beynac and St Cyprien is Castelnaud, a castle up on a steep hill. Although I am not really a fan of military arts or medieval castles, I found this one fascinating. Once paying your admission, you climb up and take any of several self-guided tour-routes through the castle. Medieval catapults and other weapons are on display outside. There is a large display of armor through the ages, including a variety of different styles of helmets. For video-game enthusiasts, there is even a video game involving a battle. The view from the castle ramparts is quite spectacular. (See photo.) There are parking lots near the top of the castle hill, but the path up to the castle is still a bit steep. The entire road was a challenge to our little group on bikes. There are rest rooms, a couple of gift shops, a snack bar, and, in season, a small restaurant. I believe it is worth the trip.
