Our guide knew every single inch of Kangeroo Island, so when he found out that I love koalas he said he would show us so many koalas I would go crazy. And so he did. Just off South Coast Road, about 4 kilometers before Flinders Chase Park, there is a long drive way on the left hand side of the road (close to the caravan park) with on each side several eucalyptus trees. The owners of this private property put a box in the beginning of this drive way where you can put 1 AUD in so you can enter "koala heaven". Oh look there on the left ... and right ... look left again! Oh no, there is one with a baby ... hey that one is sleeping! I wish I had 10 pairs of eyes to see all these cute cuddly koalas at the same time. Hundreds of them were hidding in the trees, their young clinging on to their backs. Some of them were eating the delicious eucalyptus leaves (even though there are more than 100 species of eucalyptus trees, koalas only like the leaves of a hand full of species), some were sleeping (they sleep more than 18 hours per day) and some were climbing done with their "joey" (baby koala) to give us a closeup look.
Loved it, loved it, loved it! (too bad I couldn't take one home!)
