The Astronomy Section makes available to the general public one of the most valuable scientific collections of Brazil.
One can find in permanent display both meridian and equatorial telescopes, one field telescope, celestial charts, globes of the Moon and of the planet Mars, dated from 1718, other telescopes, sextants, astronomical theodolites, including an outstanding high azimuth model.
Particularly noticeable in this Section is the Astronomic Observatory, built in 1926. This observatory houses a German refractor telescope, built at the beginning of this century, and one of the largest telescopes of its kind in Brazil.
Various planetary models were restored and made available to the students and the public.
The Ouro Preto Society of Astronomic Studies, an entity made up by students and teachers of the Federal University of Ouro Preto, and the School of Mines' Department of Fundamental Technologies are developing an educational program for the primary schools, thus rendering a great service to the community.
