Candy Shopping

Throughout the Netherlands, you will see many people walking around with plastic, cone shaped bags filled with colourful candies. I found a drugstore/market near the Stadhuis that sold candy in bulk and had a field day selecting from the many varieties available. There was no chocolate to be found because it is sold prepackaged. I did however, have a dizzying array of licorice, jellies and hard candy to choose from and the cost was the same for all. Picking up a clear, cone shaped bag, I proceeded to fill it with my selections and then took it to the cashier to be weighed. The cost wasn't bad (2.25 guilders)considering I had enough candy to keep me happily munching for the rest of the day. Even with only one of two of each type, it was more than I needed but I considered it a cultural learning opportunity (sounded good at the time). Just a note - much of the licorice is salty, rather than sweet.
