From Fort Morgan catch the ferry that runs several times a day across the mouth of Mobile Bay to Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island. Fort Gaines was the scene of one of history's more memorable moments when Admiral David Farragut attempted to steam past the fort's withering fire in order to seize Mobile Bay for the Union. Several of his ships took heavy casualties and one close to his flagship hit a torpedo (mine) and sunk within minutes. When asked by a junior officer if they might not be turning back, Farragut replied, "Damn the torpedoes; full steam ahead!"
The Island itself has a large campground with washers, dryers, and restrooms available. Is also hosts a 160 acre Audubon bird sanctuary.
