On the Southern most extremity of Mobile Bay is Fort Morgan, a US defensive fortification built after the War of 1812. Its primary claim to fame rests in its Civil War significance, helping to keep Mobile Bay open to blockade running steamers well into the last year of the conflict.
While none of the buildings on the site date back before 1872, inside some of the fort's brick recesses one finds stalagtites growing from the damp ceilings whose beginnings perhaps predate the War Between the States.
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the fort is the view it gives of the massive off-shore oil rigs that semicircle around it.
