Taormina is the top resort town in Sicily. Over the years, it has gotten a reputation with Sicilian men for being THE PLACE to meet foreign women looking for a good time. Be prepared for a lot of unwanted attention. Walking with my boyfriend, I still had men making comments, but that was nothing compared to when I was walking alone. All of my female friends had the same experiences. Some of the attention simply involves prolonged conversations, staring, cat-calls, whistles, and propositions (and proposals of marriage). Some of it has descended to the almost criminal. If you do not want the attention, be direct about it.
Many women who have been in Taormina for a while start every conversation with a new man with the statement, 'I will be your friend, I will talk to you, I will dance with you, and I will eat dinner with you. I will not sleep with you. Do you still want to talk to me?' Beleive it or not, this seems to work and a lot of foreign women then become friends with these men.
PLEASE NOTE: There are many very nice men in Taormina and experiences are radically different towns like Siracusa and Catania where foreign women do not have the reputation of being 'easy'. Don't treat all the men with suspicion. Just be aware that you may get some unwanted attention if you travel there alone.
