To the southwest lies an area that is called "De Wieden". This is a very interesting area, for it represents the most typical Dutch nature: wetlands. Lakes, moors, high reed. Here is one of the few spots in The Netherlands where you can actually drink water from the wild.
Besides the interesting nature, you can visit some small villages, like Giethoorn, that is called Venice from the north. Most of the village is only reachable by small boats, called 'punters'.
Giethoorn florishes on tourism. It has a lot of nice shops, a geology museum and a lot of terraces and restaurants. Unfortunately they make use of it and will charge you unreasonable prices for their wares.
