I've eaten at two restaurants in Woodstock, The Bear Cafe and The Landau Grill. The Landau (17 Mill Hill Road) is centrally located among the main shopping area of Woodstock. There is a covered deck and bar for outdoor dining as well as a main dining room and bar inside, complete with works from some of the local artists. The food is good and it's a positive sign that you can find many local residents dining there. It is considered by many to be the number two restaurant in town, second only to . . .
The Bear Cafe. This is the ultimate in Woodstock dining. Located two miles west of Woodstock, in Bearsville, NY on The Bearsville Theatre Property (295 Tinker Street/ Route 212). This wonderful little restaurant serves food that is on par with some of the best found in Manhattan. The steaks are delicious, the wine list is excellent, the shrimp cocktails are huge, and the homemade peach cobbler with ice cream is the perfect ending to a meal. A huge glass window reveals a pleasant stream running just behind the bar and surely makes an especially fitting backdrop during the winter as fresh snow gathers on the rocks, in the trees, and along the banks. The atmosphere is cozy, but if you want to keep things more casual you can dine at the bar and mingle with tourists and locals alike. Check out www.bearcafe.com for the enticing selections from Chef Eric Mann.
