Kingdom Hatay was once a huge kingdom in the area which is today's Turkey. It was also famous in Europe because crusaders going to the saintly city of Jerusalem went through this kingdom.
Also, the northern part of today's Syria was owned by Hatay. There's a city in Syria, about 80 km away from Antakya, called Latakya (or Lataquie).
It is a sister city to Antakya. You can get there through the Yayladagi border crossing in the mountains, which are really monumental around Antakya. I liked them because of the views which there were. Sometimes I was able to look far into the distance in Turkey and on the next hill a huge view opened into the Syrian fields.
Today Hatay is important only because of its harbour and it's situation near the Syrian border.
If you want, you can catch busses to Syrian Damascus, Aleppo or dolmus to Latakya. Or if you want to go far away you can find a bus to Cairo in Egypt there. 'No problem mister! No problem.' This is what you will hear from the bus drivers there.
