Windjammer's Wacky Olympics

Tobago Cays was the site of Windjammer's Wacky Olympics. I learned a lesson during the Captain's morning storytime when I innocently raised my hand to the Activity Mate's question, "Who likes to have a good-time?" I didn't realize I was actually volunteering to be a team captain. I had to compile a team of somewhat willing ship mates to participate in the afternoon's activity, The Wacky Olympics. I enlisted several of our friends that were traveling with us. However, some of them, including my husband, were too bashful to participate in potentially embarassing activities. So I drafted a few new friends for our team as well. We had a strong team of 6 and we had a lot of fun. The Wacky Olympics were loosely based (emphasis on loosely) on the real Olympics. Jessica, the Mandalay's activities director came up with some very unique and crazy events for our "enjoyment" and the entertainment of the non-participating spectators. Our first event involved having to pass an orange held between the neck & chin and a cucumber held between the knees down the line of our team members. This was interesting but not nearly as interesting as having to hold a quarter between our butt cheeks and then try to drop it in a glass of water. The object was to accumulate the most points by having the most team members able to get the quarter in the glass of water in 3 trys. Another perfect event for the hot Caribbean sun was the egg toss. You can imagine how good a broken egg smells in the hot sun. Fortunately, the next event was a water event. The object of this event was to be the first team to complete a swimming contest. This was done relay style. Each team member took a running start from the beach and jumped on a raft, swam to and around a judge that was standing a short distance from the shore, and then return to the beach and run back to hand the raft to the next person in line. This event actually resembled a real athletic event and it was nice to rinse the egg off. Then we returned to very messy events. One of the messiest was a beer guzzling contest. We had to guzzle a beer, which I just let run out of my mouth and down the front of me(Yuk!)and then sit with the empty bottle upside down on our head while the rest of our team finished guzzling theirs. The last event was something called Black Velvet. Champagne and Guinness Stout were mixed in a big bowl and then poured into our mouths. The object was to be the first team to finish their bowl. These two ingredients foam -- a lot. A catamaran of French tourists pulled onto the beach just as we finished this event. Here we were, two teams, sitting in a line like we were on a train, all of us foaming at the mouth like mad dogs. I'd love to know the impression we made. Maybe it's better that I don't! By this time we really smelled good: sun baked egg, beer, guinness and champagne all mixed to gether. Our team, "The Salt Suckers" had a lot of fun but we came up short. The other team took away the prize and I learned an important lesson for future cruises: be very careful about answering innocent sounding questions from activities directors.
