The Aboriginal legend about Lightning Ridge is that a huge wheel of fire fell to earth and sprayed the countryside with brilliant coloured stones. There are many dreamers in the area that have searched their whole lives for the big opal and live in shacks with no plumbing or water so they don't have to pay town taxes. The area is strewn with old beer stubbies and no one seems to care. It is hot dry and the beer tasted wonderful.
The Diggers Rest Pub is rough and there were bar fights when we were there that knocked us off our stools. The locals are definitely rough and gnarly and stare you down when you enter the pub. The Lightning Ridge Bowling Club was clean, the food was good cafeteria-style food, and the people were really friendly. We bet on the trots and the dog races as we sipped Hahns light beer.
