I found crafts fairs all over Zimbabwe. Many are daily affairs, others just on the weekend, all are aimed at the tourist dollar. The variety of merchandize is limited and similar throughout the country and the quality varies dramatically from artisan to artisan.
The crafts run the gamut from greeting cards to 6-foot wooden giraffes with batiks and sculpture the most numerous items. (By the way, you might think twice about those giraffes. Unless your willing to have them crated, they’re a problem getting home. The airlines don’t exactly consider something that size carry-on luggage.)
The country is in the midst of uncontrolled inflation, so the artisans are in fierce competition for the tourist dollar. I would stand at one booth and half a dozen other sellers would shout that their wares were better or different or cheaper. Anything to get my attention.
Don’t forget to use your bartering skills, its part of the game.
