My friend and I had gone to Vegas to celebrate my 30th birthday. I decided I couldn't go to the West without seeing one of the seven wonders of the world. So, I arranged for a bus trip from Vegas. I had estimated it would be a 4-hour tour. It was actually more like 5. It seemed longer, because the bus driver never shut up, and told at least one bad joke every 15 minutes. But we did see some interesting videos that talked about how the Hoover Dam came to be(we couldn't travel over it due to the terrorism of Sept. 11th. It's a major target. But I did see it as I flew home from the air.)We also learned about the canyon itself, how it was made, the history, etc.
Despite the long journey, it was a site well worth the visit. We visited the south rim of the canyon, as the north rim was covered in snow (it was January). Fourteen inches of snow, to be exact. My hair stood up on the back of my neck as I looked down. And it was a LONG way down. But the beauty was enough to move me to tears.
So, despite the tiring drive there and back, I'd say it's worth it. See the accompanying grand canyon entry for more.
