Whilst looking recently for somewhere to stop off for a quick bite of dinner, we stopped off at the very well located Molly's Restaurant, situated on the main street in the small semi rural town of Ballymoney, not far from the picturesque North Coast of Northern Ireland.
From the outside, you may not even notice this bar/restaurant much, as it looks just like any other pub in Northern Ireland from the outside, although well kept. Inside, they have managed to combine both the charm of a local pub, with the appeal of a relaxed restaurant serving some well priced, decent food.
Last year, this pub actually won the title of County Antrim's pub of the Year, and it is well deserving of this title.
It is not necessary to make an advance booking if there are only a small number of you, however, larger groups would be adviced to book in advance, since weekends can get rather busy. If you decide to go for a bite to eat between a Monday and Thursday evening, Molly's also run a very good meal deal of 2 courses. We ate on a Friday evening, and weren't able to avail of such offers, however after arriving and being showed promptly to a nice high chaired table, we were given the menu, which had a vast choice, so we certainly were not going to struggle to get yummy to eat.
The menu included a wide range of dishes from meats, pastas, fish and some local favourites, most of which were priced in and around £10, and some of which already had a side order as part of the dish. I ordered the bang bang chicken satay and my husband ordered gammon steaks. He also took a portion of chunky chips as an extra. To order your meal, you need to go to the bar itself, rather than a waitress come to you. This fitted the relaxed style of the restaurant very well, and since it is not a large restaurant, it was an ideal way of ordering.
Whilst we waited for our meal to arrive, we could entertain ourselves by listening to the locals chatting away, watching the large TV or listening to the jukebox.
The food took about 15 minutes to arrive and any wait was very well worth it. My husband ended up with two large gammon steaks ordered with two eggs, coleslaw, along with his chips. My bang bang chicken already came with a Caesar salad and two dips. Both of us scoffed our food down as it was totally delicious. The quantities were just the right amount that we were perfectly fill without leaving anything. On this occasion however, we didn't take up the option of a pudding, but it was possible to do so.
To pay, you simply go to the bar and settle the bill. We were very impressed by the friendly staff, who came over several times to check our food was ok and to check if we needed anything. We were also very impressed with the delicious food that was on offer, as well as the reasonable prices of the meals.
All in all, if you travelling around the north coast area of Northern Ireland, and want to stop off for some good, well priced food, without the business of some of coastal towns, then this pub/restaurant in Ballymoney is an ideal place to replenish yourself.
