Quote: Kalakaua Park Photo - Kalakaua Park, Hilo, Hawaii (Big Island) This is such a small park that you might not even notice it in the middle of Hilo town. It is located between Waianuenue Avenue, Kalakaua Street, Kinoole Street, and Keawe Street. Wander through this quiet park and visit the bronze statue of King Kalakaua which stands in the middle of the park. There is also a sundial erected in the "Fourth year of the reign of King Kalakaua, A.D. 1877." Directly across the Waianuenue Avenue is the Federal Building that houses the Post Office and Courthouse. It was designed by New York architect Henry Whitfield in 1915 and completed in 1917. On the other side of the park is the East Hawaii Cultural Center that was built in 1932 which formerly housed the Hilo County Police Department. The Kalakaua Park has several benches, and some shady trees which may have been planted during the reign of King Kalakaua. Personally, I would not recommend hanging around this park and talking to strangers. I would take a few pictures and move along through historic downtown Hilo.
