Liliuokalani Gardens are formal Japanese style gardens located along the west end of Banyan Drive. You will see beautiful panoramas of Mauna Kea and Hilo Bay at Liliuokalani Gardens. Coconut Island just offshore is connected by a footbridge leading from the gardens. Along the footpaths are pagodas designed for relaxing, torii gates, stone lanterns, and half-moon bridges spanning a series of ponds and streams. Few people visit here so it is a pleasant area to rest at. There is a nice walking area right next to the one lane road that runs between the gardens and the ocean. Many locals walk or run along the road to keep fit. This is also a popular place to take pictures with your family or friends. If you are lucky you might see a wedding taking place in the gardens. If you love to people-watch, then this is a nice place to relax and enjoy yourself. Bring along a fishing pole if you want to fish near the dock.
