Quote: Our condo at Kauai Beach Villas Photo - Kauai Beach Villas, Lihue, Hawaii This place is perfect for us. It is not gigantic or all about glamour, it has the flavor of the island, Kauai. It is smaller than some of the others, a lovely setting, kind of quiet, and yet offers some activities.

We visit Hawaii to learn about the culture, history, people and the land itself and are therefore not at the resort all day, any day during our visits. We want something nice, somewhat upscale and with an excellent location. This is an excellent location. We like to visit the south side of the island as well as the north side and east side and staying here gives us the options we are looking for. One of the issues in visiting Kauai is the time it takes to get from one side of the island to the other. It can be a 2 hour drive from a lodging on the north shore to go see a sight like Spouting horn or Waimea Canyon on the south side. Also it is a 5 minute drive from the airport, without all the airport noise. While the beach does not offer swimming due to the rocks and tides it is wonderful to sit and watch the water. There are many good beaches are all over in Kauai with Lydgate a mere 1 mile down the road which is a great place for the children and wary adults to swim in safety with amenities, like restrooms and showers.

The units facing the ocean have the advantage of the ocean view but if you are rarely there during the day you may prefer a Lagoon view with the lighted fountains. All units have a lanai with a view of the ocean or the lagoons and all are attractive views.

We fell in love with the island and particularly Kauai Beach Villas. The grounds have been well kept, the people who stay there are friendly, housekeeping is prompt and helpful if you need something like an extra pitcher. It is clean, we feel safe. After our initial visit we returned in June of 2006 and May of 2008 and plan to return at least every other year. We have brought friends with us each time and they all want to return. We definitely, and highly recommend it for visitors who want to see the island and still have time to relax.

One word of caution however, between our 2006 visit and 2008 visit, Wyndham Vacations assumed management of the resort. Our early impressions of Wyndham are not good. As owners we dearly hope that they start paying attention to this little gem of a resort.

The airport, downtown Lihue, and Kapaa

Best Things About the Resort:
It sits all by itself, with no noisy neighbors (unless you count the roosters) or traffic.

Resort Experience:
Whereas Honolulu is crowded with traffic and high rises, Kauai is extremely underdeveloped, and it chooses to stay that way! About 90% of the island (I think) is mandated to stay in an undeveloped state. Combine that with a level of biodiversity that you might think impossible for such a small island and you have something very, very special! The units at Pahio's Kauai Beach Villas are spacious and comfortable. When you make your reservation you might want to specify whether you prefer an ocean or lagoon view. We overlooked the lagoon, which is lush and peaceful (as long as you don't mind the occaisional rooster call, but then the chickens are all over the island). But some might prefer the ocean (tomayto... tomahto). There are a number of no or low cost activities at the resort as well. We missed out on the hula lessons, but had a blast painting coconuts to mail home. Yes, you can mail a coconut without additional packaging! The first morning orientation by the resort concierge staff got us off to a great start. Each unit has a washer and dryer, air conditioners in the bedroome (not require, but nice nonetheless), and a full kitchen. Perhaps the best part of the unit layout is that the two bedrooms work extremely well. It's not as if you're going to be tripping over everyone. If you're a family with kids or two couples, you can stay secluded enough to not cross paths in the morning until you've had your bath/shower, brushed your teeth and hair and fully dressed. Ah yes... civilization!

Best Things About the Resort:
Tennis courts, nice units, lanai, nice pool, chickens

Resort Experience:
This is a very attractive resort located on a beach that is lovely, but not safe for swimming. We enjoyed the pool, though, and went to nearby public beaches to swim in the ocean. The kitchen is very well-equipped; it even had a rice cooker.

In our opinion, the only downside to the resort is that is is adjacent to property where people enjoy riding dirt bikes and ATVs. Between that and the sound of the ubiquitous chickens, one should not plan on sleeping late at this resort. There's so much to see and do, one wouldn't want to sleep late anyway.

Quote: Best Things Nearby:
It is close to the airport, grocery store, and lots of restaurants. There's also a newly remodeled Radisson Hotel on-site, so there are added benefits with that--restaurant, three pools, lounge, etc - all of which Pahio guests are welcomed at.

Best Things About the Resort:
It is centrally located on the island, and there is easy access to both the north and south sides of the island.

Resort Experience:
It is a Gold Crown resort, and deservedly so. The grounds are beautifully kept. The condos are beautifully decorated. This time we stayed in a one-bedroom/two-bath condo. It had a roomy, open layout where the kitchen, living room, and dining room flowed into each other. The bedroom had a king-size bed. We were able to use our laptop for email. It has a good-size washer and dryer, as well as a dishwasher and microwave. It also has air-conditioning, something a lot of the places on Kauai don't have. Even though it was January, we did use the A/C, not that it was very hot there, but it was nice for getting the humidity out.

The resort activities included, "A Nite of Broadway," musical excerpts from three Broadway shows, Les Miserables, South Pacific, and Phantom of the Opera, and a full buffet dinner; a free tennis clinic; "Kauaian" Punch and the Torchlighting Ceremony at the Radisson Poolside; Tropical Stretch & Energizer Session; and of course, an Orientation & Continental Breakfast.

The Pahio family was very friendly, even welcoming us to the other three Pahio resorts in Princeville. We stopped into one of them for info while taking our ride to the north.

Kilohana with Gaylord’s Restaurant, Kapaia Stitchery, Kauai Museum, and the Hawaii’s oldest Lutheran Church in Lihue all are worth a visit. See Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls, and Lydgate State Park. For food and shopping needs, go to The Market Place, Safeway Plaza, and the Foodland Plaza located between Wailua and Kapa’a.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort location is the best advantage, as it is close to shops and restaurants in Lihue and Kapa’a and halfway between the two major Kauai day trips. We enjoyed the ducks and other birds that patrolled the lawn, lanais, and lagoon. The quiet setting was agreeable to us. Beach benches were the perfect place to sit and watch the dramatic ocean waves or to swivel around and watch the torch-lighting ceremony.

Resort Experience:
We knew from the lovely tree over the entrance drive that this place pays attention to details. Our two-bedroom garden view unit was spacious and comfortably furnished and equipped. The grounds were well maintained, and parking was never a problem. We did find it was easier to drive to a public beach than make the long walk to the one on the property. One problem was that car headlights shined through our first-floor bedroom curtains - so much for privacy or trying to sleep.
