Quote: McDonalds with a Twist Photo - Dodge City, Kansas The Boot Hill Museum is a non-profit organization committed to preserving Dodge City’s history and that of the Old West. Although only a reconstruction of what once stood two blocks to the east, it is filled with artifacts and exhibits. These alone are worth the price of admission to view. The admission was $7 per adult or $20 for a family the day we visited.

The entrance to the museum is located in the gift shop, and this where you buy tickets for the walk through a familiar street in the TV show Gunsmoke.

The visitor begins in a small room with an information video and then ascends the famous Boot Hill, which is fenced in and has no bodies buried in its dirt. As the visitor moves on the exhibits and artifacts are showcased in a rather large section of this Front Street replica. Most were very interesting and informative.

After touring the museum the visitor moves through buildings, like the Long Branch Saloon, where beer and sarsaparilla can be purchased for a fair price. The employees are into their work, and entertain as they also serve thirsty guests. Aside from the watering hole there is a restaurant and other places tourists can spend their money. Artifacts, such as pistols and weapons, and old children’s items, are also on display throughout these Front Street buildings.

During the summer season visitors can indulge in coach rides, gunfights, old-fashioned photos, can-can shows, and other entertainment available in the compound.

The Boot Hill Museum is located at Front Street in Dodge City, Kansas, just off of Wyatt Earp Boulevard. Their website is www.boothill.org.

Quote: Sign to Boot Hill Photo - Boot Hill Museum, Dodge City, Kansas Located in Dodge City, Kansas, the Boot Hill Visitor and Information Center contains a reconstructed replica of old Dodge City and is located on the original site of the famous Boot Hill Cemetery. This cemetery no longer is an active cemetery. In fact, it ceased being a cemetery in the late 1800s when most of the graves were moved to other cemeteries in the area. There is supposedly no one buried there now, although they kept the original hill where the old cemetery was located and there are some old tombstones they placed on this hill for effect.

I had thought that Boot Hill Cemetery still had some original graves, so I was disappointed when I found out there were none left. Since there are no longer any original graves or tombstones there, I found the whole Boot Hill areas of Dodge City simply a tourist place and not really a historic site. But it was well maintained and had good people working there. I don’t recommend making a special trip just to see Dodge City, but by all means stop there if you’re in the neighborhood.

Quote: Old Dodge City Photo - Boot Hill Museum, Dodge City, Kansas The Boot Hill Museum is a recreation of Front Street in Old Dodge City. The attractions run about one block by 1/2 block and entrance is gained through the Great Western Hotel. The hotel is now a gift shop with a small theater that presents historical information about Dodge City.

Some of the highlights of our visit to Old Dodge City were watching the citizens of the community line up for and perform an old fashioned can-can dance in an attempt to achieve a record for the longest can-can line ever. This was a special event lined up for the Memorial Day weekend celebration and was held outside the museum in the parking lot.

The museum itself housed an awesome collection of guns. This was one of the most impressive exhibits on the site. The Long Branch Saloon was also a nice attraction. Historical reenactment actors wandered the grounds and were more than happy to visit with anyone.

The morning we visited they were offering a Chuck Wagon breakfast at $1.00 per plate -- biscuits and gravy and a beverage. There were plenty of picnic tables available for the guests.
