Quote: Sunset Photo - Fort Recovery Beachfront Villa Hotel & Resort, Tortola, British Virgin Islands I recently visited Tortola and, after a good bit of research, I found Fort Recovery. I was specifically looking for a beachfront place, so this fit the bill. My husband and I travel a couple of times a year to unique places and we really enjoyed Tortola. The people were friendly, the food was good, and the water was simply magnificent. I would recommend Fort Recovery as a place to stay for a number of reasons. You are on the beach. You are easily located on Tortola to get to any of the other beaches or restaurants and the staff is very helpful. We always had fresh luxury towels everyday and would swim at the pool every early evening right after sunset on the beach. We enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners as the chef is really creative and placed everything beautifully on the dish and it tasted good, too. We liked the dining experience at Fort Recovery and many of the other restaurants like Jolly Roger and Pusser's Landing, two nearby places to eat. The jeep is a must and we explored almost all the beaches on Tortola. We took a day trip to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke but liked Tortola the most. We will definitely come back and perhaps bring some friends next time. The accommodations were great and we had all the comforts of the hotel but with a fully equipped kitchen which helped with some of our meals.

Quote: HIllsides Photo - Fort Recovery Beachfront Villa Hotel & Resort, Tortola, British Virgin Islands Facilities:

The website was a fair representation of the facility. Our group put eight in the large villa and six others in the smaller units. All were clean and in good repair. Furnishings were showing a little wear and tear. Cleaning took place daily while the group was out and about.

The bedrooms were large and comfortable. One looked out onto the beach. Bathrooms were also large, with a tiled shower big enough to use as a bedroom (if you know what I mean). The view from the beach just outside our door was superior.

All of us ate in the villa, and there was plenty of room. Mostly, though, we hung out on the large porch overlooking Francis Drake Channel. You are steps from the water across a very clean, sandy beach--quiet and private.

This is a fairly small operation, and the staff and management are attentive and accommodating.

Price:
Our package
-7 days
-3 dinners cooked in our villa
-Massage
Cost: about $2800/couple

Suggestions/Recommendations:
Rent the car for touring the island and grocery/beverage runs.
Rent the kayaks only for a day or two.
Explore the rum distilleries, which offer special and unique flavors--not just that commercial stuff.

Quote: Overall Pros: Seclusion, beautiful beaches, warm water, reasonable prices.

Overall Cons: Purchase of basic items other than food is difficult, hotels can be basic.

The bottom line, Tortola is a great vacation for seclusion and relaxation-- our favorite ever, even versus Hawaii. Fort Recovery is a moderate-class hotel with average quality-- not a top quality property.

We stayed at Fort Recovery of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands in June 2001. I cannot recommend Tortola enough - it was an incredible vacation. Our review of the hotel was mixed. It was good-- but not great. In our opinion, the hotel''s press was somewhat exaggerated. It was a value hotel with basic accommodations.

Pros: * Price was reasonable.
* Very clean.
* Right on the beach.
* Great views.
* Bedroom has air conditioning.
* Kitchen

Cons:
* Lodging was very basic.
* Air conditioning did not cool all rooms - only bedroom.
* Breakfast was meager and repetitive-- toast, coffee, juice, bannana bread, and hard boiled eggs-- every day. Size of breakfast not an issue, just repetitiveness. Staff does not particularly encourage eating breakfast in serving room - would recommend this to help meet other similar guests.
* Beach is very small. Most people at condos do not use beach. Very windy at beach on this side of island. Saw no-one swimming at beach during entire trip.
* Almost nothing is within walking distance except a basic convenience store-- no restaurants are walkable. A car is pretty much required. It is possible to use taxis, but much less convenient as most beaches are hard to reach.
* Condo staff was somewhat "flaky" and recommendations were vague. Very few recommendations, particularly restaurants, are written out which would be helpful.
* Condo staff made repeated VERY personal calls in lobby area that were often uncomfortable to overhear. Recommend a private office area for condo staff to handle personal calls.
* Condo has no restaurant. Meals are served in your room. While food was good and GREAT service, a restaurant would be nice and encourage social interaction with other guests. Meal packages include cost of meal, but not trip (not sure why).
* Several "Free" items with special package are included for all guests anyways with 7 day stay-- dinners, breakfast, boat trip. Main package benefit was arrangement of rental car-- not sure if discounted rate in total. It is easy to rent cars on island and many rental agencies are near hotel.

I would not necessarily recommend you not go to this hotel-- it was pretty good. However, their marketing literature and promotion of packages as a superior product was a little overstated. I would give this property 2 stars out of 4-- not 3 or 4.
