Amber is a stone found and mined in the interior regions of the Dominican Republic. You can find exquisite samples of the various forms it is refined into for decoration and jewelry, along with a nice little museum that explains its past and present on the island (and around the world) at the Amber Museum (Museo de Ambar) located at one of the city's main original plazas.
This small museum consists of just a few upstairs connecting rooms in an ornate building, but it has well-labeled exhibits presenting the history of the amber stone. While this semi-precious gem is now mined in just two main locations around the island, there is a diverse collection of pieces here, displaying its various shades that run from a pale yellow to a honey gold and deeper oranges and browns. Some samples have even become transparent tombs for prehistoric insects which can be seen fossilized within. All in all, this is an interesting display of the origins and development of amber mining in the Dominican Republic, along with the decorative functions it has been refined into - from earrings, necklaces and rings to every various kinds of items for the home. The downstairs shop has many contemporary pieces for sale - jewelry, home decorative items.
