This trip to Belize was to see animals in their natural environment and the trip to the Community Baboon Sanctuary was one of my highlights! Tuff Enuff Tours arranged for a plane to fly us to the mainland and had someone waiting for us when we arrived. They specialize in personal Service!
Our tour guide with Tuff Enuff Tours, Ernesto, was very entertaining on the way... pointing out different things of interest. When we arrived at the Baboon Sanctuary another guide took us into the rainforest. Before we go any farther, let me clarify a few things: This is not a zoo, the monkeys are not tame and there are no Baboons here. The locals refer to the endangered black howler monkey as a Baboon and that is where the name came from.
We hiked for about an hour through a very dense rainforest in search of monkeys. Our guide was constantly making monkey calls... but we were not having any luck. I was feeling like giving up on our search when the guide found a family of Black Howler Monkeys high in a tree.
Although these are wild animals, they will come down a branch to snatch leaves out of your hand. It was so amazing to be face to face with these primates in the wild. To watch them climb the trees is like nothing you have ever seen in the zoos.
This trip will always be in my memory as I think about feeding the younger black howler monkey. Afterward we visited the very small building that is used as a museum to learn about the importance of rainforest conservation. When the trees are gone, so are the beautiful animals.
The memories of this trip far outweigh the tour cost and will for years to come. If you want to do a mainland tour... you need Tuff Enuff Tours!
