The main reason I chose to go to Belize was the wildlife. I wanted to see animals in their natural environment that you do not see here in the Midwest. My expectations were more than delivered on this trip! Some of the wildlife we saw includes: black howler monkeys, manatees, dolphins, sea horse, loggerhead turtle, nurse sharks, eagle ray, manta ray, moray eel, assorted reef fish, and numerous bird species. If you want wildlife, Belize will definitely deliver it for you. Is this an animal lover's paradise? You better Belize it!${QuickSuggestions} Ask if prices are in Belizean Dollars. Some merchants charge in US dollars which are worth twice as much. If you do not ask, you could obligate yourself to a costly purchase.
Visit the small cafes and local park for homemade food. You will find barbecue chicken, burritos, tacos, and much more. The food is delicious... but the price is much easier on your wallet than most of San Pedro's restaurants.
Decide what you really want to see beforehand. Belize has so much to offer that it can be overwhelming. With choices ranging from Mayan temples to rainforest zip lines and scuba diving; there is more than you can do in a week or two. Decide what your top priorities are... then arrange your tours accordingly.${BestWay} Golf Carts are the main transportation on the island of Ambergris Caye. A cart rental runs about $240 week. Motor scooters are also available but they are almost as expensive as the golf carts.
Taxi cabs are available in San Pedro but are very overpriced and they cannot take you everywhere on the island. I would suggest either walking or renting golf carts instead of the taxi.
Maya Air is the best way to go back and forth between the mainland and Ambergris Caye. They use a small 12 passenger plane that is cramped... but it is a very short flight. Sometimes they will stop at other islands to pick up passengers, but it moves rather quickly. The charge is around $50.
Another option is Island Ferry. They will take you in an open boat to the mainland. This is about half the cost of the plane or less, but it takes about 45 minutes.
When traveling on the mainland I suggest using a guide. We used Tuff Enuff Tours to do Cave Tubing, Baboon Sanctuary, Manatee tour and a sunset cruise. Although guides can sometimes be costly... they are worth it! You are much safer using a tour company... and you will learn so much more about the country.
