Ketchikan

I was fortunate enough to have the Army send me to Ketchikan, Alaska, to oversee maintenance on one of our vessels at Ketchikan Ship & Drydock. I was there from January to June of 2006. I would love to go back and visit when I could take my family. My wife did get to come visit twice and we had a great time.

Although Ketchikan is in Alaska, the climate isn't what you'd expect. It is like Seattle on steroids. There was snow in the winter but it didn't stay on the ground for weeks at a time. It did rain a lot (196 inches in '05.)

If you like the outdoors, then this is your place. Hunting and fishing opportunities abound...bear, deer, trout, salmon, halibut. There are miles of hiking trails. It is a nature photographer's dream. Bald eagles are as common here as your average songbird on the mainland.

Other things of interest are local totem pole carvers, souvenir shops, and many bars and taverns.${QuickSuggestions} ${BestWay} There are two ways into Ketchikan...boat or plane. Ketchikan is a popular cruise ship destination in the summer. If you fly in you can rent a car at the airport but you will have to ride a ferry from the airport to the main island where the city of Ketchikan is.
