Summer '05: Zanzibar
greghuntoon
from Beverly Hills
September 14, 2006
This trip for me was about relaxing and enjoying the warmth of friends and family. The Zanzibar International Film Festival was a treat, as were the countless days on beaches playing soccer, swimming, snorkeling, and diving off docks.${QuickSuggestions} Enlist a travel agent in finding your ticket(s), and do your research online. I had Flight Centre arrange my travel, and I know that they saved me money in the process. As far as books go, I really do buy the Rough Guide books, but I also recommend researching as much as possible on the Internet to find other people's journals, such as this one. More than anything else, go to Zanzibar with an open heart, and an open mind. Pay attention to the prayer calls each of the five times during the day; this is a culture that beats to the rhythm of prayer. It's amazing to soak in. Get out of Stown Town, and spend time in the villages. Memories with local kids could be your most treasured keepsake. ${BestWay} Piki piki. Dala dala. Tembea tembea. Respectively: motorbike (Vespa), the dollar bus, or walking. Zanzibar is small, and you can get everywhere you need to go relatively easily. Walk through Stone Town, and you'll not regret it, even though you're guaranteed to get lost.
