The south of the Dominican Republic has many natural treasures and beaches that are a bit different to the well known east and north coasts. Specifically Bahia the las Aguilas, one of the few spots that has not been developed into a resort heaven. It has raised a lot of controversy in the international arena since it is located inside Jaragua National Park and as of this moment, untouchable for development. Other places worth seeing in the area are El Hoyo de Pelempito, a natural reserve in Sierra de Bahoruco and Cabo Rojo. Fortunately, there is now a place to stay in Pedernales to make your stay more comfortable and your trip to these places shorter. In the past, your only option would be staying in Barahona and then drive down to Cabo Rojo, and that is like 2 and a half hours away. If you start your trip in Santo Domingo, you have the option of going with an excursion, or taking a bus in Santo Domingo to Pedernales. There are also car rentals, but I do not recommend using anything else than a 4X4 vehicle since the road into the park is very rough. The interesting fact in here is how you can see two different ecosystems less than 30 minutes away, one very deserted area, and a 1,600 mountain where average temperature is around 15°C. ${QuickSuggestions} ${BestWay} Book an excursion or book your transportation upon arrival at the Hotel Villas del Mar, an option to be near the places without having to drive two more hours from the nearest town, Barahona. You can take a bus in Santo Domingo from Parque Enriquillo to Pedernales.
