Best Things Nearby:
Don't miss the self-guided tour of the Tillamook Cheese Factory about 20 miles south in Tillamook, OR.
Cannon Beach just north of the campground is also a nice place to relax, and has amazing views of Haystack Rock. A little further north is the popular summer destination of Seaside -- with all types of activities from
Go-Karts to balloon rides and golf.
Best Things About the Resort:
This campground has a wonderfully developed marina with fishing, crabbing, and boat rentals.
Resort Experience:
Once you're in the campground -- which has a low side down at the marina on one side of the highway, and the upper side by a beautiful clubhouse/pool on the other--you feel like you're off the beaten path at a fishing village. This is what the Pacific Northwest should be.
There's a beautiful view of the waterfront from the marina side, and excellent docks for fishing or crabbing. We happened to meet one of the regular campers (a fellow Navy man who had worked up at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where my ship is homeported), and was informed that elk frequently cross the bay in this region, and that he'd often watch them from the marina.
Although we were there off-season, the seasonal campers staying there informed us that the fishing and crabbing is excellent, and there are major crab boils virtually every night during crabbing season. A built-in crab pot is ready for just that and is right off the docks down by the waterfront.
As we took this trip over New Year's (which happens to be my birthday), we had planned to have a very slow weekend--possibly even all to ourselves. We didn't expect the hospitality of the owners, who were having a New Year's Day salmon barbecue and invited us to join. While not having as much time in the service as me, the owner also served in the Navy, but I don't think his hospitality was a coincidence.
We intend to return in the summer months so that we can enjoy some of the seafood pulled from these waters and use the swimming pool and recreation center on the upper side of the resort.
